IMPORTANT
Before taking your board and heading to the water, here are some tips for first time SUP boarders:
• Go to a small and calm body of water like a lake, pond, or a sandy beach with no obstacles like boats or buoys.
A sunny day, with little to no wind, is best for beginners.
• Do not paddle against the wind. Paddle with the wind behind you as much as possible, so you can get an assist
from the wind. You will tire less quickly.
• Always have a friend observe you when using your SUP board.
• Initially practice for at least one hour to get used to the SUP board.
• Stand beside the board in shallow, but deep enough water, so the fin doesn’t hit the bottom.
• Position yourself near the center of the board.
• In a kneeling position, hold the board by the edges and slowly get on the board.
• Once on the board, keep your hands on the sides of the board and slowly stand.
• Start raising your chest first while keeping your knees bent.
• Once your chest is vertical, slowly extend your legs to stand up.
• Place your feet parallel to each other, about hip-width distance and centered between the sides of the board.
• Keep your knees slightly bent, your back straight, and your toes pointed forward.
• Shift your weight by moving your hips.
• Face forward and avoid staring at your feet.
• The paddle should angle forward from the shaft towards the nose of the board.
• When paddling on the right side, place your left hand on the T-grip and your right hand on the shaft.
• Do the reverse when paddling on the opposite side.
• When falling, aim to the side of the board and into the water. Falling onto the board may cause injury.
• If separated from the paddle, retrieve your board first before retrieving the paddle.
Getting back on your SUP after falling off:
• Position yourself near the center of the board.
• Hold the handle at the center of the board with one hand.
• Let your legs float behind you, then slowly pull the board towards you to slide yourself on the board.
