1. Check the engine cooling fins (F) for excess grass
clippings, mud and the like.
2. If the cooling fins are plugged with such debris, clean
them.
4. Inspection and cleaning of the muffler and
exhaust port
An accumulation of carbon on the muffler and exhaust
port will cause a decrease in engine output.

• The muffler removal method and detailed cleaning
procedure is detailed in your engine instruction manual. If
you require more information, contact your dealer for
technical assistance.
5. Inspecting the clutch shoe

Inspection timing

Before and after operation
1. Disconnect the throttle linkage and cord from the
engine. (Follow the procedure in
[5-4] Attaching the
handle, throttle linkage and cord
in reverse order.)
2. Remove the clutch case from the engine. (Follow the
procedure in
[5-3] Mounting the engine
in reverse
order.)
3. Visually inspect the lining (H) of the clutch shoe (G).
4. If the lining (H) is worn, replace the clutch shoe (G).
NOTICE
Clutch shoe (G) replacement requires an appropriate
tool kit and special maintenance techniques. We
recommend that you ask your dealer to replace the
clutch.
5. After the inspection, mount the engine to the clutch
case and attach the throttle linkage and cord to the engine.

6. Cleaning the fuel filter and fuel tank
A clogged fuel filter can cause engine malfunctions.
Accumulated water or dirt in the fuel tank can also cause
engine malfunctions.

Cleaning frequency

Every 50 hours of operation
WARNING
Do not clean the fuel filter or fuel tank near open
flame. Cleaning oil can easily ignite and cause a fire.
1. Using a piece of wire (I) or the like, draw out the fuel
filter (J) through the fill port (K) on the fuel tank.
2. If the fuel filter (J) is dirty, clean it in cleaning oil (low-
sulfur kerosene). If the fuel filter (J) is heavily fouled,
replace it.
3. If the interior of the fuel tank (L) is dirty, rinse with
cleaning oil and eject the dirt.
Dispose of any used cleaning oil according to local laws
and regulations.
4. Install the fuel filter (J) in the fuel tank (L).
NOTICE
Properly dispose of waste cleaning oil.
7. Inspecting and adjusting the carburetor
setting
Ensure that the cutting blade or nylon trimmer does not
rotate while the engine is idling. If it does, adjust the idle
speed.
