[8] Inspection and Maintenance
WARNING
• Never inspect or perform maintenance on the machine
when the engine is running. The cutting blade is very
sharp, and can cause death or severe injury.
• Inspect or perform maintenance on the machine only
when the engine is cold. Otherwise, burns and other
injuries can result.
Carefully inspect and perform any necessary maintenance
before starting the machine. Failure to do so can lead to
severe property damage or damage to the machine.
a. Tighten or replace loose or lost screws.
b. Replace any damaged or worn parts.
c. Check for spilled fuel. Check the fuel tank cap and
wipe off any spilled fuel.
NOTICE
Refer to the engine instruction manual for more details.

CAUTION
Do not run the engine with the air cleaner cover
removed. Doing so will result in premature engine
wear.
1. Referring to the engine instruction manual, remove the
air cleaner cover (A).
2. Wash the element (B) in neutral detergent diluted with
water. Rinse, firmly squeeze out excess moisture, and
allow to dry.
3. Immerse in engine oil and firmly squeeze out excess
oil.
4. Adjust the element (B) to the contour of the air cleaner
case (C) and fit it in the air cleaner case (C).
5. Mount the air cleaner cover (A).
2. Inspecting, adjusting, and replacing the
spark plug
If the electrodes are fouled or the spark plug gap is
incorrect, the spark will not be reliable and the engine
will not run smoothly.

WARNING
Do not touch a hot spark plug immediately after the
engine has been shut off. Doing so can cause burns.
1. Remove the spark plug (D) from the engine and check
the electrodes.
2. Clean the fouled electrodes with a wire brush (E) or
similar tool.
3. Adjust the spark plug gap to 0.6 to 0.7 mm.

NOTICE
To install the spark plug (D), first finger-tighten the
spark plug. Fully tighten with the wrench provided.
5. Fully push the spark plug cap onto the spark plug.
NOTICE
The following are the causes of heavily fouled spark
plugs:
• an excessively high proportion of engine oil in the fuel-
oil mixture;
• low-quality engine oil, or
• a fouled air cleaner.
3. Inspecting and cleaning the engine cooling
fins
If the engine cooling fins become clogged with grass
