BR 218
Since 1963 the V 160 has been purchased by the German Federal Railroad
in different versions. Based on the experiences gathered with this locomotive
class, the powerful class 218 variation was designed at the end of the 60’s.
In 1971 series production of this more powerful locomotive (1,840 kilowatts
(2,500 horsepower) or 30% more than the predecessor models) was started.
The maximum permissible speed for this locomotive is 140 km/h (approx.
88 mph), or 20 km/h (approx. 13 mph) faster than the predecessor models.
The class 218 is currently the standard locomotive on non-electrified routes
of the German Federal Railroad.
The first models were delivered in the old red paint scheme.
Later the units were given on ocean blue / cream paint scheme, while cur-
rently they are painted in the new red scheme.
