Create groups of users, called permission groups, and specify what the members of each group
can do. See Chapter 15, “Managing User Settings and Permissions,” on page 165.
Depending on your organization’s needs, you may only need to create a single permission
group; or you may need to create several groups, giving each group permission to edit a specific
section of the website, or to make certain kinds of changes. For example, you can give one
group permission to edit only text, another group the ability to update image files, and so on.
5
Distribute website connection keys to users. See Chapter 16, “Sharing Website Connections,”
on page 181.
A website connection key is a file that contains the network information a user needs to connect
to the website using Contribute. These files are password encrypted so that you can safely
distribute them without fear of their being misused. The website connection key is not
required (because users can instead enter connection information by hand using the
Connection Wizard), but the key does make it easier for a user to connect to the website, and
keeps connection information private.
6
Verify that the users are able to connect to the website, and can modify and update web pages
as required. See Chapter 17, “Troubleshooting,” on page 189 if you encounter any difficulties
in getting users connected.
About the shared settings file
Contribute installs a file called a shared website administration settings file or shared settings file in
each website that you create a connection to. The shared settings file contains information about
each permission group that you define.
Storing the group settings on the website’s server makes it possible for you to change the
permissions associated with a particular group without having to send new connection
information to the group members.
Modifying shared settings
Contribute places the shared settings file in a folder labeled _mm at the root of the website
connection you define. Do not manually alter the shared settings file using a text editor. Always
configure a website’s settings using the administrative controls in either Contribute or
Dreamweaver. For more information, see “Managing User Settings and Permissions” on page
165.
Website security
Special files created by Contribute are stored in folders whose names start with an underscore
(such as _mm and _baks). Some web servers, such as Microsoft IIS, are configured by default
to prevent visitors to a website from viewing anything inside a folder whose name starts with
an underscore.
To ensure the security of your website, make sure that your web server is configured to prevent
visitors from viewing such files.
