HYPERTHERMIA

The causes, symptoms, and effects of hyperthermia

may be described as follows:

Hyperthermia occurs when the internal temperature of

the body reaches a level several degrees above the nor-

mal body temperature of 98.6°F (37º C). The symp-

toms of hyperthermia include drowsiness, lethargy,

and an increase in the internal temperature of the body.

The effects of hyperthermia include

(a) unawareness of impending hazard;

(b) failure to perceive heat;

(c) failure to recognize the need to exit spas;

(d) physical inability to exit spa;

(e) fetal damage in pregnant women; and

(f) unconsciousness and danger of drowning.
