Designer’s Guide / Power-fin Water Heater
Chapter 5 – Electrical &
Controls
The first idea for this chapter is supplying power to the water heater. A 120 VAC, 15 Amp, 1 ph,
60 Hz circuit is required for operation of the water heater.
The appliance, when installed, must be electrically grounded in accordance with the requirements
of the authority having jurisdiction, or in the absence of such requirements, with the latest edition
of the National Electrical Code ANSI/NFPA No. 70. When the unit is installed in Canada, it must
conform to the CAE C22.1, Canadian Electrical Code, Part I and/or local Electrical Codes.
1. All wiring between the appliance and field installed devices shall be made with type T wire
[63°F (35°C) rise].

SMART SYSTEM CONTROLS
The Power-fin features the Smart System control. The Smart System
control is designed to operate all the various elements of domestic hot
water heating system. The Smart System will control temperature,
operate the pump and dispense a large amount of operational data.
But its best feature is Cascade, the organized control of up to eight
separate water heaters.
CASCADE
The Cascade feature in the Smart System control will operate up to
eight water heaters. Connected with 2-wire daisy chain, any one water
heater in the group is chosen as the Leader. The other heaters operate
as Members. The Leader unit is provided with the tank sensing probe
and makes the decision on which water heater is firing and at what rate
to meet the demand.
Each day, a different water heater is assigned the role as first in the firing sequence. This built-in
“Lead-Lag” feature distributes even usage over the life of the heaters.
