1. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

Before using the generating set it is necessary to read the «Use and Maintenance Manual» of generating set and

alternator and follow the recommendations below:

A safe and efficient operation can only be achieved if the machines are used correctly, in accordance with

the instructions provided by the relevant «Use and Maintenance Manual» and  safety regulations.

An electric shock can cause serious personal injuries or even death.

Do not remove the terminal box cover and the alternator protection grid before the alternator has come

to a complete stop, and before deactivating the starting system of the generating set.

Maintenance of the generating set must be carried out by qualified and specialized personnel only.

Do not wear loose garments when working near the generating set.

All persons operating, handling or servicing the generating set must always wear protective gloves and

safety footwear. In the event that the alternator, or the complete generating set needs to be lifted off the

ground, the operators must also wear a safety helmet.

Symbols are used in this manual having the following meaning:

IMPORTANT! refers to dangerous or risky operations that may cause damage to the product.

CAUTION! refers to dangerous or risky operations that may damage the product or cause personal injury.

WARNING! refers to dangerous or risky operations that may cause serious personal injury or even death.

DANGER! refers to an immediate risk that may cause serious personal injury or death.

The person in charge of the installation of the generating set is responsible that all the necessary safety

arrangements are in place to make the whole system compliant with local safety regulations (grounding,

protection against contact, explosion and fire safety measures, emergency stop, etc.…)

2. GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The

 PHASE 9

series are synchronous brushless alernators, 9 phases with DC output, 4 poles, low ripple,  with exciter and

electronic regulator. With the possibility of use at variable speed within a specific range for each model.
They are manufactured in compliance with the provisions of

EN 60034-1, EN 60204-1, EN61000-6-2, EN61000-6-4, EN

55014-1, EN 55011

 and Directives

2006/42/EC, 2014/35/EU, 2014/30/EU

.

Ventilation.

Axial with cooling air inlet from non-drive end  side.

Protection.

 standard IP 23.

Direction of rotation.

Both directions of rotation are allowed.

Electrical characteristics.

The insulations are made with Class H material both in the stator and in the rotor. The windings

are tropicalized.

Powers.

Rated powers refer to the following conditions: ambient temperature not above 40°C, altitude not exceeding 1000

m a.s.l., continuous duty.

Overload:

A 10% overload is generally accepted for 1 hour every 6 hours.

Mechanical features:

Casing and shields are made of aluminium alloy which holds out against vibrations. The shaft is made

of high-tensile steel. The rotor is particularly sturdy to hold out against the runaway speed of the drive motors and equipped
with a damping cage. Top panel in sturdy sheet metal grants accessibility  to the various components.

Bearings

The bearings of the PHASE 9 alternators are self-lubricated and, therefore, do not require maintenance for a period of up to
30,000 hours of operation.

Types of bearings

PHASE 9 ES-EM:

  - OPPOSITE COUPLING SIDE 6305 DDU C3

- COUPLING SIDE 6208 2ZC3

PHASE 9 SM:   -

OPPOSITE COUPLING SIDE 6307 DDU C3

PHASE 9 PS-PS:

  - OPPOSITE  COUPLING SIDE 6307 DDU C3

- COUPLING SIDE 6309 DDU C3

Operations in particular environments:

If the alternator is used at more than 1000 m above sea-level, a 4% derating per

each 500 m must be considered. If ambient temperature exceeds 40°C a 4% derating per each 5°C increase must be considered.

3. INSTRUCTIONS FOR ASSEMBLY

The below control and commissioning works must be performed by qualified personnel only.

The alternator must be installed in a room with the possibility of exchanging air with the outside to prevent that the

environment temperature exceeds the values established by the standards.

Make sure that the openings provided for air intake and exhaust are never blocked and that the alternator is positioned

such as to avoid direct aspiration of hot air exiting from the alternator and/or from the drive motor.

Assembly must be carried out by qualified personnel after reading the manual.

B3/B14 CONSTRUCTION STRUCTURE (double bearing shaft) for PHASE 9 ES-EM-PS-PM

The

B3/B14

construction structure requires the use of an elastic joint between the prime mover and the alternator. The elastic

joint must not give rise to axial or radial forces during operation and must be rigidly mounted on the protrusion of the alterna-
tor shaft.

It is advisable to carry out the assembly following the below steps:

1)  Apply on the alternator the half-joint and the alignment bell as shown in

Figure 1A

 for

ES-EM

 and

 Figure 5A

 for

PS-PM

When positioning the half-joint on the alternator, bear in mind that the rotor, once the coupling is completed, must retain
the possibility of expanding axially towards the bearing on the opposite coupling side; for this to be possible, when the as-
sembly is finished, the protrusion of the shaft is positioned with respect to the machining of the cover, as shown in

Figure

1B

 for

ES-EM

 and

Figure 5B

 for

PS-PM

.

2)  Apply the relative half-joint on the rotating part of the motor as shown in Figure 1C for ES-EM and Figure 5C for PS-PM.
3)  Assemble the elastic plugs of the joint.
4)   Couple the alternator to the first motor by securing the coupling bell with the appropriate screws

(see Figure 1D

 for

ES-

EM

and

Figure 5D

 for

PS-PM)

.

5)  Secure the motor-alternator assembly to the baseplate with suitable anti-vibration mountings, making sure that no ten-

sions tend to be created so as not to deform the natural alignment of the two machines.

6)   Observe that the bearing on the opposite side of the alternator has the required expansion space (at least 3 mm) and is

preloaded by the preload spring.

B3/B9 CONSTRUCTION STRUCTURE (Coupling with conical shaft)) for PHASE 9 ES-EM

This manufacture shape foresees the direct coupling between the first motor and the alternator. It is advisable to proceed with
the assembly as follows:
1)   Secure the cover "C" to the first motor as shown in

Figure 2A

.

2)   Secure the alternator to its cover with the 4 bolts provided as shown in

Figure 2B

.

3)   Apply the tie rod “13” for axial securing of the rotor, inserting the washer “50”, screwing the self-locking nut “51” and letting

the tie rod come out of about 2mm, as shown in

Figure 2C

.

4)   Lock the rotor axially by tightening the tie-rod with a torque wrench (tightening torque of 21 Nm for tie rods M8, 48Nm for
