Battery Location Restrictions – Exposure to rain
The battery has an IP55 rating which means it’s tested to:
•
Ingress of dust is not entirely prevented, but it must not enter Solid particle protection:
in sufficient quantity to interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment.
•
Liquid ingress protection: Water projected by a nozzle (6.3 mm) against enclosure
from any direction shall have no harmful effects.
An IPX4 rating (liquid ingress protection against splashing) is generally considered
sufficient for rainfall as it protects against splashing from any direction. An IP55 rating
provides a greater level of protection.
The installation manual addresses water exposure in three places:
Page 6: "Do not expose or place near water sources like downspouts or sprinklers"
Page 7: "However, if installed outdoors, do not allow the battery back to be exposed to dir
ect sunlight and water sources as it may cause..."
Page 16: "The waterproof and properly ventilated area is recommended.
The page 6 reference identifies water sources as things like downspouts and sprinklers, it
ems that could subject the battery to sustained water flow. Rain fall isn’t a sustained stre
am of water and shouldn’t be considered a ‘water source.’
In addition, page 16 clarifies that a waterproof area is recommended, not required.
