Während dieser turbulenten Periode der Geschichte war
das Brandenburger Tor stark verfallen. Im Jahr 2000 begann
die Stiftung Denkmalschutz Berlin mit der vollständigen
Restaurierung des Brandenburger Tors. Nachdem sechs
Millionen USD in die Restaurierung geflossen waren, wurde
das Tor zwei Jahre später am 3. Oktober 2002, dem 12.

Jahrestag der deutschen Wiedervereinigung, wieder der

Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht.

Heute gilt das Brandenburger Tor als eines der berühmtesten
Wahr-zeichen Europas.

Carl Gotthard Langhans (15. Dezember 1732 – 1. Oktober 1808)
kam in Landeshut in Schlesien (heute Polen) zur Welt. Er war
kein ausgebildeter Architekt. Vielmehr studierte er von 1753
bis 1757 Jura und anschließend Mathematik und Sprachen.
Mithilfe antiker Texte des römischen Architekturtheoretikers

Vitruvius brachte er sich die Architektur selbst bei.
