Terminating RG-58 Cable
Appendix A:
Terminating RG-58 Cable
These instructions explain how to terminate an RG-58
antenna cable with a PE4156 TNC connector using the
tools from the RG-58 tool kit (KVH part no. 72-0982). A
video of this procedure is available on YouTube, titled
Terminating an RG-58 Cable .
Note: For detailed instructions on terminating LMR-240 or
LMR-400 cable, refer to the Times Microwave website:
www.timesmicrowave.com .
1. Cut the cable evenly. Then gently round the end of the
cable and make sure the center conductor is centered
within the cable.

2. Push the rubber boot onto the end of the cable,
narrow end first.
Applying a small amount of silicone
grease to the cable jacket for lubrication will make it
easier to slide the boot onto the end of the cable.
3. Slide the metal ferrule onto the end of the cable.

4. Make sure the stripping tool is set up properly for
RG-58 cable. Then depress the tab on the top of the
tool and place the end of the cable into the cutting
chamber. Be sure the end of the cable is flush with the
edge of the tool that has the “58” label.

5. Once the cable is in position, release the tab. Then
rotate the tool clockwise around the cable until the tool
turns easily. Depress the tab and remove the cable
from the tool.
