Appendix B: Glossary
CD-ROM disc:
(Compact Disc-Read Only Memory disc). A 12 centimeter (in
diameter) disc used to store large amounts of data.
Chain:
The method of connecting two EIDE drives to your system using a single
IDE ribbon cable (i.e. the two devices are “chained” together).
Device:
Any part of a computer other than the CPU (central processing unit
or processor) or working memory. Keyboards, Disk drives, tape drives, mice,
printers, scanners, monitors, and speakers are examples of devices.
Disc:
See CD-ROM Disc
Disk:
Can refer to the medium used in a hard or floppy disk drive.
Drive Bay:
See Half-Height Drive Bay
EIDE:
(Enhanced Integrated Drive Electronics). An enhanced version of
IDE that allows faster data speeds and more connected devices.
Half-Height Drive Bay:
This refers to the physical location into which you install
your CD-ROM drive. It is located on the front panel of your
computer and should be 5.25 inches wide.
Hard Drive:
Can also be referred to as a hard disk drive or a fixed disk drive.
A hard drive is usually a non-removable storage medium used to read and write
data in your computer and serves as your main storage area.
IDE:
(Integrated Drive Electronics). A pathway to transfer data from an attached
device (such as a hard disk or CD ROM drive) to the computer’s processor where
it can be used. It was created originally for hard disk drives for the use of either
one or two devices at a time.
IDE Cable:
Used to attach one or two devices to the primary or secondary
channel of an EIDE controller. Usually it has three connectors one at each end
and one in the middle.
