Hardware Information
Precautions
The KPC-9612 is grounded through its connections to your transceiver, computer, and power sup-
ply. Make sure your transceiver is properly grounded and your computer has equal ground poten-
tial. Follow the grounding instructions in your transceiver manual.
Cables provided with your KPC-9612 are shielded. If you use other cabling, be certain it is shield-
ed. We do not recommend the use of unshielded RS-232 ribbon cable in an amateur radio environ-
ment.
Lithium batteries can explode or leak if heated, disassembled, recharged, exposed to fire or high
temperature, or inserted incorrectly.
Connecting to the Computer
The KPC-9612 communicates to the computer using RS-232 signaling. This is compatible with PC
compatible computers, Macintosh, dumb terminal, and most other terminal devices. If your com-
puter or terminal uses TTL levels (such as the Commodore 64J, you will need an after-market con-
verter to supply the RS-232 signals required by the KPC-9612.
Cable Wiring
All Kantronics software requires five wires between the computer and the KPC-9612. The pins that
must be connected from your KPC-9612 to the computer for these programs are Txd, Rxd, SG,
RTS, and CTS. If you are using other software, you should refer to that documentation to deter-
mine the cable requirements for proper operation. Some software does not support hardware flow
control and will fail to operate if the RTS and CTS lines are connected.
