USB TO SERIAL ADAPTOR
Windows XP
1. Load the driver software for the USB to Serial Adapter. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Leave the adapter connected to the PC. Skip this step if it has already been done.
Complete the following steps to open the ‘Device Manager’ on your PC. These steps are necessary
to find out what ‘Com Port Number’ the PC has assigned to the adapter’s USB connection.
2. Select ‘Start’ and choose ‘My Computer’.
3. Under ‘Other Places’, select ‘Control Panel’.
If the ‘Pick a Category’ widow opens, select ‘Printers and other hardware’.
In the ‘See Also’ list, select ‘System’.
If the ‘Classic View’ window opens, select ‘System’.
4. In the ‘System Properties’ window, select the ‘Hardware’ tab.
5. Select ‘Device Manager’
6. In the Device Manager window a list of your computers hardware will be shown.
Click on ‘Ports (Com & LPT)’. If this is not shown, make sure the USB to Serial adapter is plugged
into the USB port and its software driver is correctly installed.
After clicking on ‘Ports (Com & LPT), one or more items will be shown. Look for the item that refers
to your USB to Serial Adapter, it will be something like ‘Belkin Serial Port (COM6)’ or ‘Prolific USB
to Serial Com Port (COM4)’. Click on this item.
7. When the ‘Properties’ window opens, select the ‘Port Settings’ tab.
8. Change the ‘Bits per Second’ to 4800.
9. Click the ‘Advanced’ button.
10. At the bottom of the ‘Advanced settings’ window, click on the ‘Com Port Number’ selection and
select COM1, COM2, COM3, or COM4. It does not matter which one as long as it is not listed as (in
use). Note which COM port you selected and click ‘OK’.
11. Close all open windows.
*Note:
If the USB to Serial Adaptor is installed in a different USB port, the COM port
number changes
