3 ADJUSTMENTS

3.13 REEL TO BEDKNIFE _______________________________________________________
(Pre-adjustment Check)
1. Check the r eel bearings for end pl ay or radial play. If
there is any abnormal mov ement of the r eel, up and
down or s ide to side, adjust or replac e components as
needed.
2. Inspect the reel blades and bedk nife to ins ure good
sharp edges without bends or nicks.
a. The cutting edges of the reel blades and bedknife
must be sharp, free of burr s, and show no signs of
rounding off.
b. The bedk nife and bedk nife bac king mus t be
securely tighte ned. The bedk nife mus t be straight
and sharp.
c. A flat surface of 5/32 in. (4 mm) minimum must be
maintained on the front fac e of the bedknife. Use a
standard flat file to dress the bedknife.
3. If wear or d amage is beyond the point where the reel
or bedk nife c an be c orrected by the l apping proc ess,
they must be reground.
4. Proper reel-to-bedknife adjustment is critical. A gap of
0.001 to 0.00 3 i n. (0.025 to 0.076 mm) must be
maintained ac ross the enti re length of the reel and
bedknife.
5. The reel mus t be p arallel to t he bedk nife. An
improperly adjusted r eel will los e it s sharp edges
prematurely and may res ult in serious damage to the
reel and bedknife.
6. Grass conditions will also affect the adjustment.
a. Dry, s parse c onditions will require a wider gap to
prevent heat bui ldup and da mage to the reel and
bedknife.
b. High qualit y gras s with a good mois ture content
requires a closer gap (near zero).

1. Read
Section 3.13
before making the adjustment.
2. Start adj ustment a t the le ading edg e of the r eel,
followed by the trailing end.
The leading end of the
blade is the end that passes over the bedknife first
during normal rotation.
3. Loosen nut (
C
) 1/4 turn on b oth ends of the c utting
unit.
a. Turn adjuster (
A
) in 1/16 to 1/8 turn increments.
b. Slide a fee ler gauge or shim stock.001 in. (.025
mm) b etween th e r eel bla de a nd th e bed knife.
Do not turn reel.
c. Adjust t he t railing en d o f the r eel i n th e s ame
manner th en r echeck the a djustment at th e
leading end.
d. Tighten all ha rdware a nd r echeck th e
adjustment.
e. When properly adjusted, the reel will spin freely,
and y ou should be a ble to c ut a pi ece o f
newspaper along the full length of the reel, when
the paper is held at 90°.
