Note:
For easier access to the spark plugs and wires at
the right side of the motorcycle, remove the air cleaner
assembly following the procedure in the AIR CLEANER
section.
To install, place the spark plug wires in position
between the cylinder heads and under the engine upper
support head. Make sure that the terminal ends with the
long boots are positioned at the left side and connect
the terminals to the spark plugs.
From the right side of the motorcycle, connect the
terminals to the back of the coil. Slide the boot over the
terminals to seal the connection at the coil.

Remove the two ignition cover housing mounting
screws, using a 3/16" hex bit. Remove the cover and
discard the gasket.
Using a 1/8" hex bit, remove the screw retaining the
rotor and remove the rotor.

Inspect the leads and connector for the sensor sealed in
the cover. If damaged, repair or replace as necessary.
Position the rotor on the end of the pinion shaft with the
alignment pin in the shaft slot. Apply blue threadlock to
the threads of the retaining screw and install the screw,
using a 1/8" hex bit. Tighten the screw to
48–72 inch-pounds.
Place a new gasket in position and install the ignition
cover housing. Apply blue threadlock to the threads of
the cover screws and install the screws. Tighten the
screws to 8–12 foot-pounds.

The ignition module is located under the shock absorber
mount crossmember just forward of the battery box.
Remove the chassis fairings following the instructions in
the FRAME AND ACCESSORIES SERVICE section.
Disconnect the five-pin ignition module connector.
Remove the two module mounting screws, using a
7/16" wrench and remove the module.
To install, reverse the order of removal. Tighten the
mounting screws to specification.

The Indian Chief Vintage motorcycle is equipped with
an electronically controlled ignition system. As such,
timing is programmed into the ignition module and does
not require adjustments as required in past models.
Refer to Electronic Engine Diagnostics under ENGINE
TROUBLESHOOTING for an ignition timing check
procedure.
