Chapter 2. AC power requirements
Power configuration
The system has redundant power cords. For dual line cord options, you must
supply power from two independent sources of electricity. Consult an IBM support
representative to discuss power source options for the four line cord solution.
Overview of power controls
The IBM XIV Storage System contains three (3) uninterruptible power supplies that
maintain power to the system in the event of an ac power loss. Removing all ac
power from the IBM XIV Storage System causes an emergency shutdown. All
modified data is then saved to disks, and the system turns off within 30 seconds.
Turning off power
The IBM XIV Storage System is turned off by issuing the shutdown command
from the IBM XIV Storage System GUI or the IBM XIV Command-Line Interface
(XCLI). The shutdown command saves modified data in the storage unit to disks
before removing power.
Attention:
Do not use switches or buttons on the unit itself to initiate a power-off
sequence, because doing so results in data loss.
Emergency power-off considerations
The IBM XIV Storage System does not have an emergency power-off (EPO) switch.
However, you can connect the system to a room EPO. The EPO switch is internally
powered by the uninterruptible power-supply units for use with
unpowered-switch circuit breakers. The EPO circuit is considered a Class 2 circuit
(UL, CSA standards) and an SELV (safety extra-low voltage) circuit (IEC standard).
Contact your IBM support representative for more detail on connecting to a room
EPO switch.
Attention:
Turning off the IBM XIV Storage System by using the EPO circuit
results in data loss, as well as possible loss of configuration. An IBM service
representative must reinstall an IBM XIV Storage System that you have turned off
using a room EPO switch. If the system loses ac power, but is not turned off using
an EPO circuit, data and configuration are preserved.
Power sources
Four ac-power source configurations are available.
v
Two 60 A, 200-240 V ac, single-phase, two-pole, line-line ground female
receptacles, each connected to a different power source
v
Four 30 A, 200-240 V ac, single-phase, two-pole, line-line ground female
receptacles, connected to two (2) independent power sources
Note:
Contact an IBM support representative to discuss the considerations
involved if you choose to use the four 30 A single-phase configuration.
v
Two 30 A, 200-240 V ac, three-phase receptacles, each connected to a different
power source
