2.2 Solubility
The solubility of lithium bromide in water is very large. The concentration of saturated solution at
20
℃
of room temperature is approx. 60 %. As shown in Fig. 6, when water evaporates from
aqueous solution or the concentration reaches higher than the saturated point or the liquid
temperature drops, salts of 1, 2, 3, or 5H2O precipitates to cause so-called crystallization. So, be
sure to pay a special attention to the concentration range of the solution to be handled.
2.3 Specific Gravity
As lithium bromide contains bromide in itself, the specific gravity is relatively larger both in anhydride
and aqueous solution as shown in Fig. 8.
2.4 Specific Heat
Smallness of the specific heat of absorbent is very important in enhancing the thermal efficiency of
the chiller-heater. As shown in Fig. 7, when the specific heat is small in operation and the
evaporation latent heat of water is large, a high efficiency is expected in the absorption chiller-heater
using water and lithium bromide.
2.5 Vapor Pressure
The essential reason why lithium bromide is used as absorbent in the chiller-heater is that the vapor
pressure of aqueous solution is very small, that is, the moisture-absorbing property is very good. As
shown in Fig. 9, the vapor pressure becomes very small at a high concentration.
2.6 PH
The aqueous solution of pure lithium bromide is almost neutral. However, the solution provided by
our company is adjusted to be alkali in consideration of corrosion problem.
2.7 Corrosiveness
The corrosiveness of aqueous solution of lithium bromide to metal is smaller that of saline solution or
calcium chloride brine, etc. But, as corrosion is an essential matter in designing equipment, the
lithium bromide solution is adjusted to be alkali and a special corrosion inhibitor is added to the lithium
bromide solution.
2.8 Others
Although the toxicity of aqueous solution of lithium bromide solution is not so strong, be careful not to
touch directly with skin, not to drink or lick, or not to put it into eyes.
