Reeve:
Leadng a lne through a block or other
object.
Rhumb
line:
A lne cuttng all merdans at the same
angle; the course followed by a boat sal-
ng n a fxed drecton.
Riding
light to
anchor
light:
An all-around whte lght, usually hosted
on the forestay, to show that a boat under
50 ft. (15m.) s at anchor. It must be vsble
for 2 mls. (3 km.).
Rigging
screw:
A deck fttng wth whch the tensons of
standng rggng, e.g. stays, shrouds, etc.
are adjusted.
Roach:
The curved part of the leech of a sal that
extends beyond the drect lne from head
to clew.
Rope:
Tradtonally a lne must be over 1 nch n
sze to be called a rope.
Rudder
post:
The post that the rudder s attached to.
The wheel or tller s connected to the
rudder post.
Run:
To run wth the wnd aft and wth the
sheets eased well out.
Running
rigging:
All the movng lnes, such as sheets and
halyards, used n the settng and trmmng
of sals.
Safety
harness:
A devce worn around a person’s body
that can be attached to the shp to prevent
the person from beng separated from the
shp.
Sampson
post:
A strong post used for to attach lnes for
towng or moorng.
Scope:
The length of rope or cable pad out when
moor anchorng.
Screw:
A propeller.
Scuppers:
1, holes n the toe ral that allow water to
dran off the deck; 2, dran cockpt through
hull.
Seacock:
A valve that shuts off an underwater nlet
or outlet passng through the hull.
Secure:
To make fast. To stow an object or te t
n place.
Seize:
To bnd two ropes together, or a rope to a
spar, wth a lght lne.
Serve:
To cover and protect a splce or part of a
rope wth twne bound tghtly aganst the
lay.
Serving
mallet:
Tool wth a grooved head, used when
servng a rope to keep the twne at a con-
stant and hgh tenson.
Set:
1, to host a sal; 2, the way n whch the
sals ft; 3, the drecton of tdal current or
steam.
Shackle:
A metal lnk wth a removable bolt across
the end; of varous shapes: D, U.
Sheath-
ing:
A coverng to protect the bottom of a
boat.
Sheave:
A grooved wheel n a block or spar for a
rope to run on.
Sheep-
shank:
A knot used to temporarly shorten a lne.
Sheet:
The rope attached to the clew of a sal or
to the boom, enablng t to be controlled
or trmmed.
Shrouds:
Ropes or wres, usually n pars, led from
the mast to the chan plates at deck level
to prevent the mast fallng sdeways; part
of the standng rggng.
Sloop:
A sngle-masted salng boat wth a man-
sal and one head sal.
Snatch
block:
A block that can be opened on one sde,
allowng t to be place on a lne that s
already n use.
Spar:
A general term for any wooden or metal
pole, e.g., mast or boom, used to carry or
gve shape to sals.
Spindrift:
Spray blown along the surface of the
sea.
Spinna-
ker:
A large, lght, balloon shaped sal set
when reachng or runnng.
Splice:
To jon ropes or wre by unlayng the
strands and nterweavng them.
Split pin:
See cotter pn.
Spread-
ers:
Horzontal struts attached to the mast,
whch extends to the shrouds and help to
support the mast.
Stall:
A sal stalls when the arflow over t breaks
up, causng the boat to lose way.
Stan-
chion:
Uprght metal post bolted to the deck to
support guardrals or lfelnes.
Standing
part:
The part of a lne not used when makng a
knot; the part of a rope that s made fast,
or around whch the knot s ted.
