Heat sink and fan
IMPORTANT:
The bond between the heat sink and the processor might be very tight.
If the computer will power on, before removing the heat sink, turn on the computer until it warms the heat
sink. Warming the heat sink loosens the bond between the heat sink and the processor, thereby making
separating them easier.
Make sure not to pull the processor out of the socket when you lift the heat sink, especially if you cannot
warm the heat sink before removal. Inadvertently removing the processor can damage the pins.
Before removing the heat sink and fan, follow these steps:
1.
Prepare the computer for disassembly (

2.
Remove the access panel (
).
3.
Remove the fan duct (
Remove the heat sink and fan:
1.
Disconnect the fan cable from the system board (1).
2.
Remove the three Torx screws that secure the fan to the heat sink (2).
3.
Remove the fan from the heat sink (3).
4.
Loosen the four captive screws (4) that secure the heat sink to the system board.
IMPORTANT:
To avoid damaging the pins in the processor socket, remove heat sink retaining screws in
diagonally opposite pairs (as in an X) to even the downward forces on the processor.
5.
Lift the heat sink from the processor (5) and set it on its side to keep from contaminating the work area
with thermal grease.
Reverse the removal procedures to install the heat sink and fan.
IMPORTANT:
Tighten heat sink retaining screws in diagonally opposite pairs (as in an X) to evenly seat the
fan sink on the processor to avoid damage that could require replacing the system board.
