Manual Operation of the Windlass:
To drop the anchor, insert the windlass handle into the star fitting on the side of the windlass.
Turn this fitting counter clock wise. It will take some force. This will also act as your brake to
slow the decent of the anchor and chain. So keep the handle in there and be ready to break
when you deploy the anchor. If you do not apply the brake to slow the decent then the entire
chain will deploy and deploy rapidly.
Push the anchor over board with a slight tension on the brake. Ease the anchor to the sea
floor. Deploy enough anchor rode for the depth and conditions and then tighten the brake/
star fitting. Fit your snubber and set your anchor as described in previous section
To retrieve your anchor ease the brake/star fitting and haul in the chain whilst the helmsman
slowly moves the yacht forward. Best to have two people on the bow: One to crank and the
other to direct the chain into the locker.
