Nestable Bucket Balance
5
Weigh to Order
Skill:
Using nonstandard measurement to weigh objects.
Materials:
•
Nestable Bucket Balance
•
Cubes
(or other consistently sized item)
•
5 objects from around the classroom or house
(pencils,
erasers, paper clips, scissors, counters, blocks, etc.)
Explore nonstandard measurement by using cubes to measure
5 different objects. For example, have children determine how
many cubes it will take to balance a pencil. “The pencil weighs
cubes.” As they measure, have children put the objects in
order from lightest (fewest cubes) to heaviest (most cubes).
For an additional challenge, try to predict how many cubes will
be needed to balance one object versus another. “How many
more cubes do the scissors weigh compared to the pencil? Which
object is the heaviest? Which is the lightest? Which object is the
smallest? Which is the biggest? Is the biggest also the heaviest?”
If you have small weights, you can do this activity again using the
weights instead of cubes. This will allow the child to explore using
standard measurement.
