INSPECTION
The whole ignition system may be tested for malfunctions or weak spark
with testers. If the electrodes generated a good spark at the
recommended gap then the system is functioning; if there is no spark
proceed with testing each component until having found the malfunction.
Follow the troubleshooting charts until finding the source of the trouble.
Ignition coil test
Place tester leads between the coil’s output wires (Pink-Green) to
determine the resistance and insulation (fig. 1).

Resistance value: 150
Ω
± 10% at 20°C.
The above is believed to be incorrect and it is thought that the correct
value should be:
110
Ω
± 10% at 20°C.
b) Insulation test: make sure the needle doesn’t move while
placing one terminal to ground.
Pick-up coil test
Place tester leads between the pick-up’s output wires (White-Green;
White-Red) to determine the resistance and insulation (fig. 2).

HT coil test
Remove fuel tank and seat.
Disconnect the electrical wires and spark plug cap.
Remove ignition coil.
Measure the resistance between the coil’s terminals.
Standard resistance: 0.2 ÷ 0.3
Ω
± 10% at 20°C.
If there is no continuity, replace coil.
Measure the resistance between the electrical wire terminal and the
high tension wire without the spark plug cap.
Standard resistance: 4.5 k
Ω
± 10% at 20°C (fig. 4).
Replace the ignition coil in case the values vary a great deal from the
above mentioned ones.
CDI control unit test
A common tester isn’t able to take any readings, therefore test by
substitution.
Spark plug cap resistance
1 k
Ω
(fig. 5). Replace if out of specification.
