5.4 Trouble Shooting
When the UPS is malfunctioning or an abnormality occurs, troubleshooting is needed. Here after,
general trouble shooting guidance will be provided.
Basically, we can divide the trouble shooting into three difference levels, to have clear idea how to
carry out service and increase service efficiency. Technician can consider selecting the level
before starting action based on the service policy, available time and real situation:
a)
System level
Just find out what happen to the system or the unit, replace a spare unit if the problem is
not recoverable. It will take less time to finish the troubleshooting, but maybe highest
cost
b)
Board level
Find out which PCB board failed, and replace the PCB board. It will take medium time
medium cost to finish the troubleshooting.
c)
Component level
Find out which component failed, and replace the component. It will take longest time but
less hardware cost to finish the troubleshooting.
So most important of all should be finding out what happened. Before taking any action, collect
relative information that would normally would be valuable. Generally, the information
maintenance technicians can collect include:
1. Application electrical environment
a) Input mains voltage
b) Input mains power quality
c) Input mains wiring, grounding condition
d) Capacity of the battery bank.
e) The type of load, capacity of the load
2. Physical environment of the UPS
a)
Temperature, Ventilation
