y
The users and maintenance personnel must be physica-
lly strong enough to handle the size, weight and power
of the pneumatic tool.
y
The pneumatic tool must be held in the correct manner;
the user must be ready to handle normal as well as sud-
den movements and have both hands available.
y
The user must maintain a balanced and safe stance.
y
The control mechanism for starting and stopping must
be released in the event of a power outage.
y
Only lubricants recommended by the manufacturer may
be used.
y
It is necessary to use personal safety glasses or goggles;
suitable gloves and protective clothing is also reco-
mmended.
y
The backplate must be checked before every use. It
must not be used if cracked, broken or if it has been
dropped.
y
Direct contact with a moving sanding plate must be
excluded to prevent compression or cutting of hands or
other parts of the body. Appropriate gloves should be
worn for hand protection.
y
The tool must never be put into operation unless it is
fitted with the sanding tool for sanding the workpiece.
y
When using the tool on plastics and other non-
-conductive materials, there is a risk of electrostatic
discharges.
y
Dust and fumes created when sanding and polishing
may create an explosively hazardous atmosphere.
Always use systems for extracting or lowering the
amount of airborne dust that are suitable for the given
material being sanded or polished.
HAZARDS ARISING FROM REPETITIVE
MOVEMENTS
y
When using the polisher or rotating, vibrating or
eccentric sander for work tasks, the user may be expo-
sed to discomfort of hands, arms, shoulders, neck or
other parts of the body.
y
When using the polisher or rotating, vibrating or
eccentric sander, it is recommended that the user
assume a comfortable stance, maintain a safe posture
and avoid inappropriate positions or positions lacking
balance. During longer duration work tasks, the user
should change position, which may help to avoid dis-
comfort and fatigue.
y
If the user starts suffering from symptoms such as
permanent or repetitive discomfort, pain, tremors,
tingling, desensitisation, burning feeling or stiffness,
then these warning symptoms should not be ignored.
The user should inform the employer and consult the
situation with a qualified healthcare professional.
HAZARDS ARISING FROM ACCESSORIES
y
The polisher or rotating, vibrating or eccentric sander
must be disconnected from the power source prior to
attaching or changing work tools or accessories.
y
The user must not touch the work tools during or after
the use of the pneumatic tool as the work tool may be
hot or sharp.
y
Only the size and type of accessories and consumables
recommended by the manufacturer of the polisher or
rotating, vibrating or eccentric sander may be used.
Other types or sizes of accessories or consumables must
not be used.
y
Grinding discs and cutting tools must not be used.
y
It must be checked that the maximum rotation speed of
the tool (flap discs, grinding belts, fibre discs, sanding
plates, etc.) is higher than the nominal speed specified
on the polisher or rotating, vibrating or eccentric
sander.
y
Self-adhering sanding discs must be centred on thje
sanding plate.
WORKPLACE HAZARDS
y
Slipping, tripping and falls are the main causes of injury
at the workplace. Warning against slippery surfaces
caused by the use of tools and also against the danger
of tripping on air utility lines or hydraulic hoses.
y
The polisher or rotating, vibrating or eccentric sander
is not intended for use in a potentially explosive envi-
ronment and is generally not insulated against contact
with live electrical conduits.
y
The workplace must be checked for electrical cables,
gas pipes, etc., which could present a hazard as a result
of the pneumatic tool being used.
VII. Safety instructions for
the sander
The following instructions must be followed for the
operation and maintenance of the sander:
y
Do not use the sander if you are tired, under the
influence of alcohol or other substances affecting
your concentration. Prevent children, uninstructed or
mentally or physically unfit persons from using the
pneumatic tool. Ensure that children do not play with
the pneumatic tool.
y
Prior to commencing any work activity, remove all
adjustment and installation tools from the tool and
test the fault-free operation of the safety and starting
mechanism, and check that all nuts and bolts are pulled
tight.
GENERAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
y
In the event of multiple hazards, it is necessary to read
the safety instructions and understand them before
installation, performing repairs or maintenance, repla-
cement of accessories or when working in the vicinity
of a polisher or rotating, vibrating or eccentric sanders.
The result of not adhering to this requirement may be
serious injury.
y
The polisher or rotating, vibrating or eccentric sander
should be installed, adjusted and used by qualified and
trained personnel.
y
The polisher or rotating, vibrating or eccentric sander
must not be modified. Modifications may lower the
effectiveness of safety measures and increase the risks
for the user.
y
The safety instructions must be kept for future referen-
ce; must be provided to the user.
y
The polisher or rotating, vibrating or eccentric sander
must not be used if damaged.
y
The pneumatic tool must be periodically inspected to
verify that the nominal values and designations requi-
red by this part of ISO 11148 are legibly marked on the
pneumatic tool. If necessary, the employer/user, must
contact the manufacturer to request a replacement
label.
SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS SPECIFIC TO WORK
ACTIVITY RELATED TO PLANAR SANDING/
GRINDING:
a) An excessively large sandpaper is not used with
the sanding plate. When selecting a sandpaper,
it is necessary to follow the manufacturer‘s
recommendations.
A large sandpaper that extends
past the perimeter of the sanding plate risks tearing and
may cause jamming, tearing of the disc or kickback.
SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS SPECIFIC TO
POLISHING WORK TASKS:
a) No loose part of the polishing collar or its
fastening lace may be left to rotate freely. All
loosened fastening laces are tucked in or cut
away.
Loose and rotating fastening laces could tangle
in with the user‘s fingers or jam into the workpiece.
FRAGMENT EJECTION HAZARD
y
The user must be aware of the fact that as a result of
a defect on the workpiece or accessories or possibly of the
pneumatic tool itself, high speed projectiles may be ejected.
y
When using the polisher or rotating, vibrating or
eccentric sanders or when replacing the pneumatic
tool‘s accessories, impact resistant eye protection must
be worn. It is recommended that the required level of
protection is assessed for each work task individually.
y
When working at above head height, a safety helmet
must be worn.
y
At the same time, it is recommended to assess hazards
to other persons.
y
A check must be performed to ensure that the workpie-
ce is securely fastened.
HAZARDS RELATED TO GETTING CAUGHT
/ WINDING ON
In the event that loose clothing, personal jewellery,
necklaces, loose hair or gloves are not kept at a sufficient
distance from the pneumatic tool or accessories, chocking,
scalping and/or lacerations may result.
HAZARDS DURING OPERATION
y
Using the pneumatic tool may present a hazard to the
hands of the user, including cuts, grazes and hazards
from the effects of heat. Appropriate gloves should be
worn for hand protection.
