13.5 Condition and construction of the transport trailer

Livestock transport trailers must feature suitable loading and unloading equipment.

The trailers and separating walls must be in flawless condition from a technical and hygienic
perspective.

They must be constructed, used and maintained such that animal suffering is prevented and the
safety of the animals is ensured.

They must also be able to withstand the wear and tear caused by the animals.

The condition of the vehicles and separating walls must enable correct and straightforward
cleaning and disinfection.
13.5.1 Livestock transport specifications

Tethers must only be used if they do not cause any pain, suffering or injury to the animals.

Ropes, belts or tethers must be strong enough to withstand the anticipated strain and must be
designed such that the animals cannot strangle or injure themselves and can be freed quickly
when necessary.

When transporting cattle, suitable tethering facilities must be in place.

The animals must always be protected against adverse weather conditions, extreme
temperatures and climate fluctuations.

The vehicles and transport trailers must be constructed such that the animals cannot escape or
fall out and are able to withstand the stresses caused by the movement of the transport vehicle.

Separating walls must be available in sufficient quantity and must be able to withstand the
weight of the animals. When transporting cattle and pigs, the separating walls must be designed
such that they can be moved quickly and easily and also keep the animals in place.

The trailer must feature a non-slip floor. The floor surface must restrict discharge of manure and
urine to a minimum.

Cattle and pigs are generally provided with bedding or similar material
– befitting the type and
quantity of the transported animals, the transport duration and weather conditions
– to ensure
their comfort throughout the transport. Excrement must be sufficiently absorbed.
Vehicles used to transport live animals must be labelled as such in an easily visible,
clearly legible manner.
