It serves to regulate the combustion air from below above the ash tray and the
grate towards the wood. It thus necessary to avoid the ash tray becoming
overfull because the ashes may negatively affect the access of the primary
combustion air.
When burning wood logs, the slide must first be fully opened. After ignition of
the wood, the primary air damper may be closed if necessary.
