Section 8 In Depth Guide to Cable Testing with the

CableSHARK

The following sections describe the measurements that the CableSHARK is capable of performing. Some
measurements will be optional based on the CableSHARK software package installed, therefore may not be
applicable to your unit.

8.1 Frequency Response Testing

Frequency response (also known as Insertion Loss or Attenuation) testing with the CableSHARK enables the
operator to determine the quality of copper cabling to ensure that it is capable of carrying ISDN, HDSL,
ADSL (including ADSL2/2+), or VDSL technologies. This test is offered in two variations; Single-Ended and
End-to-End Frequency Response tests

(note that End-to-End does not support VDSL)

.

Using the single-ended test, a cable can be evaluated with only one CableSHARK. This allows for great
flexibility. For single-ended tests, it takes less than 45 seconds for the CableSHARK to locate the reflection
from the end of the cable or a major impairment and perform its measurement. The Auto-TDR method is
employed to locate the end of the cable or major impairment. Knowing the distance to the cause of the
reflection allows the CableSHARK to accurately measure the frequency response of the cable.

8.1.1 Setting up a Frequency Response Test

From the Main Menu, pressing Function button F1 (CABLE TESTS) will bring the user to the CABLE TESTS
pop-up menu. Choosing FREQUENCY RESPONSE from the pop-up menu will invoke the Frequency
Response Test Setup menu. Figure 8.1.1A below, shows this menu.
