1 SUBWOOFER LEVEL
The subwoofer volume control should be adjusted to match the main speaker volume of your hifi or home cinema
system. As a general rule, subwoofer performance should not dominant the sound. Excessive bass leads to a
smeared soundstage and can result in unpleasant resonances at certain frequencies.
2 CROSSOVER FREQUENCY
Used to adjust the frequency at which the subwoofer crosses over. Signals above this crossover frequency are
gradually rolled off so they do not interfere with the main speakers. The adjustment of the crossover frequency will
depend on the size and frequency response of the main loudspeakers.
Loudspeaker configuration
Crossover frequency
Home cinema set with LFE channel
125 - 180 Hz
Hifi/Stereo system with very small loudspeakers
125 - 80 Hz
Stereo system with satellites and subwoofer
80 - 125 Hz
Hifi/Stereo system with medium-sized bookshelf
speakers, smaller floor standing loudspeakers
(compatible with most ELAC loudspeakers)
50 - 80 Hz

MODE
Provided on the rear of the subwoofer, there are three positions available:
•
AUTO
Normal position. The ELAC subwoofer is switched to standby mode (indicator light LED glows red).
A sensor controls the inputs. If the appropriate bass signal is present, the power output stage is switched
on. Within tenth of a second, the subwoofer is ready for operation (indicator light LED glows green). The
subwoofer switches into standby mode again after a signal pause of more than 15 minutes (indicator light
LED glows red).
Note:
If the automatic turn-on operation only responds to full volume, please increase the bass/LFE level
of your surround receiver and minimize the subwoofer level. This way, there will not be any changes in
bass level and the subwoofer will be turned on automatically at a lower volume.
•
ON
The subwoofer is operating continuously (indicator light LED glows green).
•
OFF
The subwoofer is in standby mode continuously (indicator light LED glows red).
To switch off the subwoofer completely, please switch the MODE control to OFF. A second later, the
Power switch can be turned off without any noise.
4 LED
ON / Standby LED. Glows green when device is switched on; glows red when device is in standby mode.
5 POLARITY
The subwoofer polarity can be switched to ‘
+
’ or ‘
-
‘. The best polarity should be determined by listening. The ‘ best’ polarity is
the position which results in a higher bass level.
6 LINE LEVEL IN
Input jack for connecting the ELAC SUB 2040 to the subwoofer output ‘BASS / SUB OUT / LFE’ of a surround amplifier or
surround receiver. For this connection, a commercially available mono cable with RCA phono connectors can be used. Do
not plug or unplug this cable while the subwoofer is in operation.
