Fault finding
Table 4 - Fault finding
Symptom
Check
Action
Ultimate pressure is poor.
Is there a leak in the vacuum
system (real or virtual)?
Locate and seal the leak.
Is the vacuum system dirty?
Clean the vacuum system.
Is the pump fluid contaminated?
Inspect the pump fluid. If necessary, clean
the pump and refill the pump with fluid.
Is the heat input high or low?
Check that the electrical supply voltage is
correct. Check the heaters for the correct
power rating, electrical continuity and
poor thermal contact. If necessary,
replace heaters.
Is the cooling inadequate?
Check that the cooling-water supply
temperature and flow are correct.
Is the backing pressure too high?
Check for a leak in the backing pipeline
and seal any leak found.
Is the backing pump performance
poor?
Check that the backing pump is suitable to
back the 30B5M. Check that the pump
operates correctly; if necessary, rectify
any defect found.
Has the pump fluid undergone
thermal breakdown?
Inspect the pump fluid. If necessary, clean
the pump and refill the pump with fluid.
There are inlet pressure surges.
Is the heater input correct?
Check that the electrical supply voltage is
correct. Check the heaters for the correct
power rating, electrical continuity and
poor thermal contact. If necessary,
replace heaters.
Is the fluid outgassing?
Inspect the pump fluid. If necessary, clean
the pump and refill the pump with fluid.
Is there a leak in the vacuum
system ahead of the 30B5M pump
inlet?
Check for a leak and seal any leak found.
Is there a trapped volume in the
vacuum system?
Eliminate the trapped volume.
Have 'O' rings or other seals been
excessively lubricated?
Inspect the 'O' rings and other seals. Clean
off excessive lubrication, or replace the
seals.
Is there too much fluid in the
pump?
Drain the excess fluid from the pump
