Aluminium paint was applied to the walls of the tyres to reduce the effect of solar heating when the aircraft was in strong sunlight. In the photos, a heavy, light
grey, staining from the exhausts is visible on the fuselage sides. This is because the pilot was experimenting with leaning out the fuel mixture in a series
of range trials to extract maximum range from the aircraft before the squadron moved north.
