Genital warts is one of the most common sexually transmit-
ted diseases.
In women, the human papilloma virus causes cervical dys-
plasia, which is commonly found in cytology smears from the
cervix. Cervical dysplasia with the presence of the human pap-
illoma virus is considered to be a precancerous condition.
Epidemiological research has shown that the papillomavirus
plays an important role in the pathogenesis of cervical cancer.
More than 90% of patients with cervical cancer have cells con-
taining the human papilloma virus.
Condyloma acuminata and wart infection takes place
through physical contact and domestic contact (via household
goods). Minor injuries to the skin and mucous membranes aid
contamination.
Laryngeal papillomatosis is a rare disease. In young children,
it is caused by infection from the mother during childbirth, and
in adults via oral sex.
Diff erent types of papillomavirus also cause precancerous le-
sions and cancer.
Diagnosis: for warts and genital warts, it is simple - they are
visible to the naked eye. If the vagina and cervix are aff ected,
a gynecologist should be consulted, and diagnosis confi rmed
by cytology smears from a cervical biopsy.
The most sensitive and specifi c diagnosis method to deter-
mine the type of human papilloma virus is considered to be
PCR.
