3.8.1 FLYWHEELING WITH AN EXTERNAL 1PPS OR 1, 5, 10 MHz REFERENCE
The bc630AT enters a 'flywheeling' mode whenever the decoded time source drops out or becomes
corrupted. While flywheeling, the bc630AT continues to provide uninterrupted time based on the Time
Code Period measurement obtained from the decoded time source.
The highest 'flywheel' accuracy’s are maintained with the filter enabled. (Refer to section 3.1.4.) When
enabled, the bc630AT averages the decoded time code period measurements over time which results in
higher flywheeling accuracy’s. Flywheeling accuracy’s of better than 1 part in 10E6 (less than 3.6
milliseconds per hour of drift) are typical with stable ambient temperatures. Flywheel accuracy,
however, degrades with fluctuating temperatures.
The external 1PPS and 1, 5, 10 MHz reference inputs provide a means to maintain higher flywheeling
accuracy’s over temperature. When the external flywheel is enabled, the bc630AT automatically
detects a valid 1PPS or 1, 5, 10 MHz frequency and, if found, adjusts the bc630AT's Time Code
Period to match the one second time period of the external reference.
3.9 MASTER/SLAVE OPERATION
The bc630AT Real Time Clock Module has the capability of operating in a Master/Slave mode in
which Slave bc630AT's synchronize digitally to the time base of a Master bc630AT. This allows
computer synchronization of two or more PC's without external time code. Synchronization accuracy’s
of
"
1 microsecond (with filter enabled) can be achieved between the Master and Slaves. The
Master/Slave mode of operation is summarized as follows:

A Master bc630AT decodes the time source selected in it's Time Code Select register. A 1PPS
synchronization pulse and serial 9600 Baud major time message (days - seconds) is broadcast via
two RS-422 lines approximately each second through the RJ11 connector (J2). The Master
broadcasts these digital time signals when decoding time or flywheeling. The necessary signals for
synchronization are the 1PPS synchronization pulse and the corresponding "buf2 ddd:hh:mm:ss" time
message. (Refer to Section 4.2.1.)

Slave bc630AT's select the Master bc630AT as the time source in their Time Code Select register.
The RJ11 connectors (J2) of the Master and Slave are linked with 6 conductor telephone cable to
the Master bc630AT. When a valid 1PPS and time message is received from the Master,
synchronization takes place. All features of the bc630AT are available with this mode including
"flywheeling". (Refer to Figures 3-1 and 3-2). No signals are transmitted to the RJ11 connector
from the Slave bc630AT.

Terminate the RS-422 line with the bc630AT's termination resistors by moving the existing jumper
on JP3 pins 1, 2 to JP3 pins 3, 4 and move the jumper on JP3 pins 5, 6 to JP3 pins 7, 8 (Refer to
Table 4-7). The two bc630AT's on the end of the network should be terminated.
