General Maintenance Procedures

Return to Master Table of Contents

Heat Discoloration

Heat discoloration can range from faint yellow to

dark b lue r esulting fr om o verload o r  incorrect

lubrication.
Excessive heat can cause softening of races or

rollers.
To check for loss of temper on races or rollers, a

simple file test may be made. A file drawn over a

tempered part will grab and cut metal, whereas

a fil e dr awn  over a har d pa rt wi ll  glide r eadily

with no metal cutting.
Replace bea ring if o ver  heating  damage is

indicated. Chec k  seals  and othe r r elated par ts

for damage.

Stain Discoloration

Discoloration c an r ange fr om  light br own t o

black ca used b y in correct l ubrication o r

moisture.
if the stain can be removed by light polishing or

if n o e vidence o f o verheating is  v isible, th e

bearing can be reused.
Check seals and other related parts for damage.
