Dual-Speed Stackable Hubs User’s Guide
Making Connections

The Diagnostic Port
The diagnostic port on the rear panel of the master hub is used to establish a
connection with a device to allow out-of-band management of the DFE-
2600 series hubs stacked with it. The console device connected to the di-
agnostic port can be a terminal (or a computer running terminal-emulating
software) or a PC running TCP/IP TELNET.
Diagnostic Port Connection
The diagnostic port is an RS-232 DCE interface. To establish a physical
line connection with an RS-232 serial port (DTE) on a PC acting as a con-
sole, all you need is a straight serial cable, as shown in below. Note that a
DCE-to-DTE connection requires a straight serial cable, not a null-modem
cable.
You can use the diagnostic port on a DFE-2600 series master hub to con-
nect a VT100-compatible terminal or a computer running an ordinary
terminal emulation program (such as the terminal program included with
the Windows operating system). In all cases, your terminal parameters will
need to be set to:
♦
VT-100/ANSI compatible,
♦
Arrow keys enabled,
♦
9600 baud,
♦
8 data bits,
♦
No parity,
♦
1 stop bit.
You can also access the same functions over a TELNET link. Once you
have set an IP address for your hub (see the beginning of this chapter), you
