Each processor is equipped with NOR Flash memory used to store the system BIOS and
Power-on Built-In Test (PBIT) diagnostics firmware. Boards with the second generation Core
processor i7-2715QE have an 8MB NOR Flash. Boards with third generation Core processor
i7-3612QE have a 16MB NOR Flash. In the event of accidental corruption of the primary boot
Flash, the CHAMP-AV8 is fitted with secondary boot Flash devices (also known as the
Permanent Alternate Boot Site, or PABS). Thus, each processor node contains two 8MB NOR
Flash devices—one for main boot flash and one for PABS.
Figure 1.7: Boot Flash SPI Bus Architecture
By application of a common hardware jumper, or assertion of a backplane signal
(ALT_BOOT_L), both processors will boot from the secondary flash (PABS) to regain operation
of the card and recovery of the primary flash. Both primary and secondary boot flash devices
feature hardware write-protection jumpers (JB7 for the primary boot flash and JB5 for the
secondary boot flash - see Table 2.3, “Jumper Block Definition,” on page 2-7 for more details).

The CHAMP-AV8 features 8 GB of NAND flash per processor (16 GB total per CHAMP-AV8) for
storage of the operating system and user application software. A SATA interface connects the
PCH to a NAND flash-based Solid State Drive (SSD). Software accesses the flash via the
operating system file system. The SSD contains a Flash Controller that implements bad block
management and wear levelling functions. For maximum reliability and longevity, Single Level
Cell (SLC) technology flash devices are used. Hardware jumpers are provided to disable write
access to the NAND flash (jumper, JB1) – see Table 2.3, “Jumper Block Definition,” on page
2-7 for more details.
