with a cuff pressure measuring device. The pilot balloon is only

intended to indicate the presence or absence of volume of pressure

or vacuum in the cuff and is not intended to provide an indication of

intracuff pressure level.

• Use only with equipment having standard 15mm connectors.

• If lubrication is used on the device prior to insertion, follow the

manufacturer’s application instructions.

• Prior to use, check that the obturator can be inserted or removed

without difficulty.

• During an MRI scan the pilot balloon should be secured near the

Y connector of the ventilator circuit at least 3 cm from the area of

interest to prevent movement and image distortion.

Instructions

1. The physician should determine whether a Shiley Neonatal or

Pediatric tube should be used.

NOTE: A Neonatal tube has the same inner and outer diameter as

the Pediatric tube of the same size but has a shorter cannula. A long

Pediatric tube has the same inner and outer diameter as a standard

Pediatric tube of the same size, but has a longer cannula.

2. Test the cuff, pilot balloon and valve for integrity by inflation

prior to use. This test can be performed as follows: Inflate the cuff

with the volume of air indicated in Table 1. Then either observe

for deflation over several minutes or immerse the tube in sterile

saline and observe for air leakage. After test inflation, completely

evacuate the air.

NOTE: Inflation volumes are for test purposes only. Consult the

physician or home care provider for the appropriate inflation volume

when the tube is positioned within the trachea.

3. A thin film of water soluble lubricant should be applied to the

tube and protruding portion of the obturator to facilitate ease
of inserting the tube. When using a water soluble lubricant, verify
that the lubricant does not enter and occlude the tube lumen which
may restrict ventilation.

4. Insert the obturator into the proximal end of the tracheostomy

tube. The obturator, when completely seated in the tracheostomy
tube will protrude slightly from the distal tip.

5. After the tube is properly in place, immediately remove the

obturator. The obturator should be cleaned* and then stored in
an accessible location near the patient should it be needed for
reintubation.
