1.6.4 Installation of the memory modules
Increasing the amount of system memory is the most common "on-site" enhancement that is likely to be made to your CIARA Astro
SN-170T micro PC. Increasing your micro PC’s memory usually involves adding main memory. DDR4 Synchronous Dynamic Random
Access Memory (DDR4 SDRAM) is packaged only in 288-pin Dual In-Line Memory Modules (DIMMs).
Your CIARA Astro SN-170T uses only DIMM memory modules. Each DIMM module can have a capacity of 4 GB, 8 GB or 16 GB. The
minimum system capacity is 4 GB and the maximum system capacity is 32 GB. Your system supports only DDR4 2133 MHz memory
speeds. Furthermore, the memory has to be of the SPD type (Serial Presence Detect) to insure optimal operation. Only non-ECC
memory is supported.
NOTE
If you are planning to increase your micro PC’s memory please contact us to ensure that you select the memory that meets our
specifications, otherwise errors could result.
Install a matched pair of DIMMs equal in speed and size in the black socket of channel A (DIMM A1) and channel B (DIMM B1) as
shown below.
If you ignore this recommendation, the system will operate in single channel mode without taking advantage of the dual channel
technology.
You may install 4 GB, 8 GB or 16 GB unbuffered non-ECC DDR4 DIMMs into the DIMM sockets.
The CIARA Astro micro PC supports the following types of memory organization :
• Dual channel (Interleaved) mode. This mode offers the highest throughput for real world applications. Dual channel mode is enabled
when the installed memory capacities of both DIMM channels are equal. Technology and device width can vary from one channel to
the other but the installed memory capacity for each channel must be equal. If different speeds DIMMs are used between channels,
the slowest memory timing will be used.
• Single channel (Asymmetric) mode. This mode is equivalent to single channel bandwidth operation for real world applications. This
mode is used when only a single DIMM is installed or the memory capacities are unequal. Technology and device width can vary from
one channel to the other. If different speeds DIMMs are used between channels, the slowest memory timing will be used.
Minimum memory configuration for the system is 4 GB. The maximum memory configuration is 32 GB.
Due to the memory address limitation on 32-bit Windows® OS, when you install 4 GB or more memory on the motherboard, the actual
usable memory for the OS can be about 3 GB or less. For effective use of memory, we recommend that you do any of the following :
- Use a maximum of 4 GB system memory if you are using a 32-bit Windows® OS.
- Install a 64-bit Windows® OS if you want to install more than 4 GB on the motherboard.
