Mirroring and Inverting

One image can produce a number of different masks depending on its mirror/flip and invert 
parameters: 

Normal

Mirrored

Flipped

Mirrored & flipped

Normal

Inverted

If the same mask is used on two layers, inverted in one, the layers can be blended together as 
follows:

Note that it is not actually necessary to use the mask on layer 1, since layer 2 overlays it anyway. 
The effect of the mask in layer 1 is that as layer 2 is faded out, layer 1 retains the black masked out 
area.
