After you have recorded the index fi nger, middle fi n-
ger, ring fi nger and little fi nger prints in turn, repeat
the procedure for the thumb, printing its fi ngerprint on
the fi ngerprint record card. In this way, patterns of all
fi ngerprints of the right hand have been recorded on
these cards (as shown in Figure 6).
Step 7:

Fill out fi ngerprint record cards (as shown in
Figures 7 and 8)
After making records for fi ngerprints, remember to note
down date, name, age and right hand as shown in the
fi gures. Then look at the fi ngerprint characteristics ca-
refully with a magnifying glass: write down any special
marks, lines and little scars visible on the fi ngerprint in
the Notes column. To protect the fi ngerprint patterns,
an additional round transparent sticker can be placed
over the pattern. Record the fi ve fi ngers of the left hand
in the same way.

You can also make records like this by pressing your
fi ngerprints down. Pressing down and rolling are two
ways for printing fi ngerprints. The method described
above is the rolling method. Pressing down is also
called plane printing. Using this method, your fi ngers
are folded in, leaving only the targeted fi nger extending
out to make a print on the card. Fingerprints obtained
in this way can supplement those obtained by rolling fi n-
gers. This is because fi ngerprint patterns extend almost
half way along the surface of a whole fi nger and some
areas that need to be categorized are often close to the
edges of the fi ngerprints, so the rolling method often
fails to show them all (as shown in Figure 9).

Comparing and categorizing fi ngerprints
Next, use the fi ngerprint record cards (7) and the ma-
gnifying glass (3) to see the type of the fi ngerprint pat-
tern you have obtained. Look at your fi ngerprint „crime
scene“ card (6) and check whether there are the same
fi ngerprints. Record the result on the fi ngerprint record
cards.

We can play a cops and robbers game with this equip-
ment. First, follow the method described above to make
fi ngerprint record cards for everyone playing the game.
Then look for fi ngerprints at the „crime scene“. The
