drive motor
The motor that provides the necessary motion, usu-
ally a turning motion, for any particular component or
components
energy source
Any source of electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneu-
matic, chemical, thermal, or potential energy
emergency stop
A line status in which all machinery is stopped and
operation is suspended Emergency stop conditions
occur when an emergency stop button is pressed or a
fault occurs in a machine
fault
A condition whereby a machine’s operation is sus-
pended after a problem has occurred with a machine
or the line After the problem has been corrected, the
machine usually must be reset before it can be restart-
ed A reset is a precautionary step that helps to ensure
safe operation
field device
A sensor that provides input to a programmable logic
controller, such as a photoeye, limit switch, or proxim-
ity sensor
flash point
The temperature at which the film begins to melt.
flight length
The distance between two adjoining pushers on the
infeed chain Also called the infeed pitch
gauge
(1) The film thickness or (2) an instrument used for
exact measuring or testing
gear
A toothed machine part, such as a wheel or cylinder,
that meshes with another toothed part to transfer mo-
tion to other machine components
gear box
A metal enclosure housing a group of gears and shafts
Gear boxes are usually sealed and filled with lubricant.
guards
Shields that protect the operator from dangerous
parts of a machine or system
gussets
Tucks made in the sides of a film tube to ensure an
even cut and seal
height
The distance from the base of an object to its top
home position
The location a machine component returns to while
waiting to begin a cycle A component’s resting posi-
tion
infeed
The location where product or containers enter a ma-
chine or packaging line
infeed pitch
The distance between two adjoining pushers on the
infeed chain. Also called the flight length.
jog
To advance a machine through its cycle manually by
pressing and holding a JOG or RUN button The ma-
chine usually will run at a slow, preset speed An op-
erator usually jogs a machine to align its components
or to ensure the machine is ready to work at normal
speeds
leading edge
The downstream edge of a product or package
length
The measure of the base of an object along its greatest
dimension Usually a measure of how long something
is
limit switch
A mechanical sensor that detects the presence or
absence of an object by making or not making contact
in a mechanical switch
lock
A lock provides protection by holding an energy isola-
tion device in the safe position, thus preventing the
equipment from becoming energized
