OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS cont.
FAN OPERATION
Th
e fans are located beneath the fi rebox of the appliance, it recirculates room air up the back and across the
top. Th
is design allows the air to travel the furthest distance across the hot surfaces resulting in super heated
air, most of which can be felt exiting the top of the appliance. Th
e fan should be off until the appliance reaches
normal operating temperatures. Aft er approximately 30 minutes, the fan speed adjustment should match the
thermostat control setting, i.e. if your appliance is set at medium then your fan should also be set at medium,
low—low, high—high etc. Th
e fan control is on the right-hand side of the lower shroud / ash shelf.
ICE - FORMATION AND PREVENTION
Most of what you see coming from the chimney of a properly operating catalytic
appliance
is water vapor. In
extremely cold weather - and with some exterior chimneys - this vapor may freeze in the chimney, to the point of
actually blocking the chimney and extinguishing the fi re. In such weather, occasionally burn the
appliance
for 4
or 5 minutes with the thermostat setting on
HIGH
to melt any possible ice buildup.
OPTIMAL THERMOSTAT SETTING
Any thermostat position between
LOW
and
HIGH
will produce the desired clean burning characteristics.
However, since each application can vary, you may fi nd it necessary to operate the thermostat to suit your
application. A thermostat setting on
HIGH
will produce a maximum heat which is more than suitable for
heating the average size home and off er the cleanest door glass.
1. Starting the fi re. Each appliance, home, installation, chimney installation, and homeowner combination
works a little diff erently. Th
e fi rst several times you fuel the appliance, it may not react as you expect.
A little experimentation may be needed to fi nd the right combination of fuel and thermostat setting to
achieve the maximum effi
ciency. Th
is is one of the joys of burning wood. You, the wood burner, make it
work. And you can see what happens as it is working. Be patient, the air / fuel mixture and temperature
must be stabilized before maximum combustion effi
ciency can be achieved.
2. As the combustor temperature (as indicated by the thermometer) passes into the active red zone, further
adjustment to achieve the desired room temperature should be made in small increments for the most
eff ective cleaner burning operation. Changes should be made as few times each day as possible. When
the thermostat knob is moved from high to low, more gases are produced, so the combustor has more
fuel; consequently the combustor thermometer may register a higher heat for several hours aft er the
thermostat is turned down.
3. Keep hot coals active so when you reload the appliance you will reduce the time necessary to maintain an
active combustor.
4. Th
e thermostat is set at the factory.
DO NOT TAMPER WITH THE THERMOSTAT
, this will result in
a malfunctioning thermostat.
REMOVAL FOR CLEANING AND INSPECTION
Removal of your insert for cleaning purposes is generally not required if a proper installation has been done. In
the event that removal is required, for cleaning or inspection, be sure not to damage any parts needed for re-
installation.
