Positioning the trap: when and where?
A detailed description of how to best position the traps can be found in the internet at:
http://www.biogents.com/html/img/pool/Placement_and_effect_en.pdf
The correct positioning of the BG-Mosquitito has a direct influence on the success of the catch rate.
The correct time to operate the trap:
The trap should be put out when the average temperature has risen over 15°C. At this time, mosquitoes
become active and begin mating. It is best to catch the mosquitoes now before they have a chance to
reproduce and lay their eggs. It is important to make sure that the BG-Mosquitito runs 24 hours a day;
otherwise, the mosquitoes will be able to fly out of the trap.
The correct position:
To locate the most optimal area to place the BG-Mosquitito trap, you must establish where the tiger mos-
quitoes are coming from. The mosquitoes fly from the following two directions:
1.
Breeding waters:
Mosquitoes lay their eggs in stagnant water. From there, the recently emerged mos-
quitoes begin searching for their first prey. Possible breeding waters could be:
• Wet habitats and puddles (all that do not contain small fish)
• Rain barrels, rain gutters, or other water containers
• Flower pots, standing flower vases, plant saucers or similar containers
2.
Resting places:
Mosquitoes rest in foliage, e.g. hedges, and other shady, windless places with high
humidity to prevent water loss. From here, mosquitoes also begin their search for prey. Mosquitoes do
not like places with intense direct sun exposure or wind.
The BG-Mosquitito trap is meant to be hung roughly one meter off of the ground. The trap needs to be
positioned close to mosquito breeding spots or resting zones and in a location that is windless, shady and
roughly one meter from other objects (e.g. bushes). Keep the trap out of strong wind. Strong winds not only
deter the mosquitoes but can also affect the suction from the ventilator and allow already caught mosqui
-
toes to escape. During strong winds, the BG-Mosquitito trap can be battered around due to its lightweight
and cause the power cable to become unplugged.
Important:
Do not place the trap in tall grass or directly under bushes. All of the upper surfaces of the
trap must be clearly visible to the mosquito, so that its specialized appearance is effective in attracting
mosquitoes.
5.
Hang up the trap by the string that is attached
to the intake funnel by following the positioning
instructions in the next chapter. The maximum
height should be 1.5 meters from the ground [F8].
6. Connect the power supply cable to the power
cord from the ventilator. Plug the power supply
unit into a wall socket [F9].
