PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS

The FC400P de tec tor, with its base, forms an ad dress able de tec tor which trans -
mits  sig nals  rep re sent ing  the  de tec tor  dig i tal  cur rent  lev els  to  a  re mote  con trol
unit.The con trol unit eval u ates these sig nals against pre-de ter mined cri te ria and
de cides when an alarm con di tion has oc curred. The in for ma tion given be low there -
fore re lates to the per for mance of the as a trans ducer only, since the sys tem alarm
re sponse is de ter mined by the con trol unit.

4.5.1 RESPONSE TO SMOKE

The re sponse of an op ti cal smoke de tec tor is nor mally mea sured with ref er ence to
the obscuration pro duced by smoke.Obscuration is mea sured in per cent per
metre, or in dB per metre.The lat ter unit is used in EN54-7 and is des ig nated ‘m’.
Un for tu nately,  there  is  no  fixed  re la tion ship  be tween  op ti cal  scat ter ing  and
obscuration, the ra tio be tween them be ing de pend ent on the type of smoke. For
con ve nience, ‘grey’ smoke is nor mally used but white and black smokes give more 
or less scat tered light re spec tively for a given obscuration level.The work ing of the
FC400P is a lin ear func tion of obscuration for a given type of smoke as shown
graph i cally in Fig. 6.

ADDRESS FLAG

Re fer to Fig. 7. The ad dress flag is used to iden tify the ad dress and zone of the de -
tec tor.The ad dress flags are sup plied in a packs (ad dress 1 - 255, with a dif fer ent
col our for each loop) and are or dered sep a rately from the de tec tor.The ad dress
flag is fit ted to the bot tom of the de tec tor. When the de tec tor is fit ted to the base

and turned un til fully lo cated’ the ad dress flag is then trans ferred to the base.If the
de tec tor is re moved from the base, the ad dress flag re mains with the base.
