dark (possibly strong smelling) urine, a noticeably decreased urge to pass
water, a dry mouth, dry lips and skin, nausea or constipation.
Body water values that are too low do not necessarily indicate low consump-
tion of fl uids. Th
is could also be caused by consuming dehydrating substances
(alcohol, drinks containing caff eine such as coff ee or black tea and some
foods such as asparagus) or medicines. In order to counteract the loss of
fl uids, adults should consume approximately two liters of fl uid, preferably
in the form of water, unsweetened fruit juices, fruit or herbal teas.
Nonetheless, it would be a mistake to believe that above-average body
water levels are harmless or even healthy. Th
e exact opposite is true. High
levels of body water can be a sign of serious health problems such as reduced
kidney function. Improperly functioning kidneys and resulting reduced urine
production with the same amount of fl uid consumption can lead to water
collecting in the body. Too much water in the bodily tissue places a burden
on the heart and results in increased blood pressure. Water collecting in the
lungs could even cause life-threatening lung edemas.
Th
e importance of body water for individual health can hardly be stressed
enough. And that is precisely why you should begin checking your personal
body water proportion on a regular basis.
Body fat
A curse or a blessing?
For a long time, the total body weight was used to determine whether
or not someone was to be considered overweight. However, body weight
alone does not indicate whether or not someone is overweight nor is it a
good measure of general health. Th
is is due to the fact that our bodies can
consist of varying proportions of muscle mass and fat.
An example of this:
If someone exercises regularly, then we can gener-
ally assume that his/her body weight consists of a higher portion of muscle
