etwork (
VLAN
) is a group of devices that can be located anywhere on a
network, but all devices in the group are logically connected together. In other words, VLAN allows
end stations to be grouped together even if they are not located on the same network switch. With a
traditional network, users usually spend a lot of time on devices relocations, but a VLAN
reconfiguration can be performed entirely through software. Also, VLAN provides extra security
because devices within a VLAN group can only communicate with other devices in the same group.
For the same reason, VLAN can help to control network traffic. Traditional network broadcasts data to
all devices, no matter whether they need it or not. By allowing a member to receive data only from
other members in the same VLAN group, VLAN avoids broadcasting and increases traffic efficiency
(see
Figure 2.75
).

There are two common approaches to assigning VLAN memberships, as follow

Port-Based VLAN
(or Static VLAN equivalently) assignments are created by assigning ports to a
VLAN. If a device is connected to a certain port, the device will be assigned a VLAN to that specific
