Latching Mechanism and Air Bags
The latching system (Figure 16) employs a lever and
roller mechanism which transfers mechanical force pro-
vided by the air bags to the latch plate on the anvil hous-
ing.
By varying air bag pressure, the machine can be adapted
to different types of materials and grinding conditions.
Air bag pressure can be monitored and adjusted on the
control panel display. See “Air Bag (Adjust)” on
page 146.
Latch Plates
There are two types of latch plates: one with a detent
and an optional one without a detent, called a “float”
latch plate.
It is important to know which latch plate your machine
is using because operating characteristics between the
two are much different.
See “Operating with the Anvil Detent Latch Plate” and
“Operating with the Anvil Float Latch Plate” on
page 26.
Figure 15 illustrates how the latching mechanism and
air bags operate when a non-crushable object, such as
tramp steel, hits the anvil.
