4.2.4.5. Ratio
Together with Threshold, and complemented by Attack and Release, this is where you
mainly act to find the best settings for the compressor.
This parameter defines how much compression (level and dynamic reduction) is applied to
the audio when the detected signal level exceeds the Threshold. Just like Threshold, Ratio is
also influenced by the "compressor knee". Since the Comp DIODE-609 has a hard knee, the
maximum compression effect is reached at about the set Threshold level, and there will be
almost no compression below that level.
Compression level is expressed as a ratio. The right-hand value is the compressed level,
while the left-hand value is the original. When you see a compression ratio of 4:1, it means
that an original value of +12 dB will become reduced to just +3 dB after compression is
applied.
For a compressor like this one (a bus and master compressor), VERY gentle ratios are
preferable (usually no more than 2:1, most of the time less than that). This also depends on
the type of music and the results you are striving for, of course.
Generally, it is better to start with the lowest compressor ratio, and raise it when you feel
the need. Remember that Attack and Release times are also important to take into account.
Compression range goes from 1.1 (1.1:1, meaning that there is almost no compression) up to
6:1. This may not seem like much when compared, for example, with the values of the other
compressors already released by Arturia, but you must remember we are dealing with
another kind of compressor here. This one is more suitable for bus and mastering (although
it can be used elsewhere) and therefore extreme compression is not what it was made for.
It was conceived to "glue" the audio together, creating a more homogeneous and polished
final sound. Therefore, lower values are best for this task.
By default, Compression is positioned at 2:1.
4.2.4.6. In switch
This switch allows to bypass the Compressor section. By default, the switch is On, which
means the audio will pass through the compression circuit, and will be processed by it.
When the switch is in the Off position, the audio will bypass the Compressor circuit.
