NOTE: If main bearing inserts are to be used
again, mark their locations for correct positioning
during installing.
3. Using appropriate thread taps, clean up the main
bearing and cylinder head cap screw thread bores.

4. Install main bearing caps into their appropriate
saddles; then finger-tighten the cap screws.

5. Make sure the cylinder deck plane is completely
free of all gasket material, carbon, and sealant;
then using a precision straight edge and feeler
gauge, check for cylinder deck trueness. Maxi-
mum variation must not exceed 0.1 mm (0.0039
in.).

NOTE: Planing the engine block is not recom-
mended as it will directly affect piston-to-cylinder
head clearance. To determine if the cylinder deck
can be planed, use the following procedure.
A. Determine the maximum cylinder deck varia-
tion (V
d
).
B. Add the deck variation (V
d
) to the piston pro-
trusion (P
p
) determined during removing (V
d
+
P
p
) to determine final piston protrusion (P
pf
).
V
d
+ P
p
= P
pf
.
C. Compare the final piston protrusion (P
pf
) to the
chart to determine if gaskets are available that
would allow planing of the cylinder deck.
Example 1:
P
p
= 0.82 mm (0.032 in.)
V
d
= 0.13 mm (0.005 in.)
0.82 + 0.13 = 0.95 mm (0.037 in.)
P
pf
= 0.95 mm (0.037 in.)
