7. MAINTENANCE
CAUTION:
Prior to any maintenance operations disconnect the filter from the power supply.
Thanks to large volume of filtration cartridges, their cleaning or replacement is not necessary too often. Initially it is rec-
ommended to perform them once every two months and then according to the experience. More frequent maintenance
will be necessary only in case of very large or densely populated aquaria.
CAUTION:
The maintenance should never begin with opening the filter! As long as the filter is filled with water and con-
nected to the aquarium it can cause spilling of the water out of the aquarium on the principle of connected vessels!
Proceeding according to subsection 7.1 you can safely disconnect the intake/outlet system along with the control assem-
bly (3) and leave them on the edge of the aquarium.
7.1. Disconnecting the control assembly with the intake/outlet system
Fig. 18.
Turn the control assembly (3) in the cover (4) clockwise
until resistance
, into the position shown on figure, accord-
ing to arrow I. In this position both intake and outlet of the control assembly are closed.
Carefully loosening, remove the control assembly (3) with the hoses (1) according to the arrow II and leave it hanging on
the edge of the aquarium.
CAUTION:
In this position no further actions are allowed on the control assembly (3) (“flood” threat!!!). The mainte-
nance of the control assembly and its setting is described in detail below in subsection 7.4.
7.2. Maintenance of the filtration media
CAUTION (Fig. 19
)
:
The water level in the filter is higher than the edge of the container (10), therefore prior to removal
of the cover (4) the excess amount of water – ca. 1,5 ÷ 2 liters – should be poured out.
Fig. 20.
After unfastening of all the catches (8) according to arrow “I” remove the filter cover (4) from the container (10)
according to arrow “II”.
Pour out the remaining water from the container (10). Using the handles, one by one remove all of the magazines (7) with
filtration media. Clean the container (10). For convenience of this operation – in case of
FZKN 150 PLUS
and
250 PLUS
types – it is recommended to remove the flow cover (9) and UV sterilizer first. The manner of execution of this action is de-
scribed under sterilizer maintenance in subsection 7.5. After completing cleaning the container, install back the sterilizer
with the flow cover (9) in the container according to subsection 5.2, see descriptions of figures 5 – 6.
7.2.1. Manner of conduct with filtration media
•
The top magazine (7) contains
phenol-free sponge
that collects mechanical impurities from the aquarium, therefore
in time it clogs up, gradually decreasing the efficiency of filter pump. The speed of this process depends on many fac-
tors (e.g. the volume of the aquarium, “density” of fauna and flora). Initially it is recommended to perform the mainte-
nance of filtration media after two months, later according to own experience. Under the maintenance procedure the
sponge should be washed in chlorine-free water (e.g. collected from the aquarium) from the impurities it collected and
then squeezed out. In case of noticing stratification or collapsing of the sponge – replace the sponge with a new one
(the sponge is adapted to repeated use). Besides the mechanical filtration the sponge – thanks to its porous structure
– can also be a seat of bacterial cultures similarly to the ceramic filtration cartridge, therefore it contributes to biologi-
cal purification of the water.
•
Activated Carbon (CarboMax)
purifies water chemically, removing even dissolved organic decomposition prod-
ucts and toxic gases such as chlorine and ammonia. Absorptive properties of activated carbon are exhausted within
a month’s time, therefore it is worthwhile to replace this filtration cartridge during every maintenance of the filter.
•
Zeolite (ZeoMax)
– crystalline porous silicate – is a natural mineral of huge area of open pores serving for absorptive
collection of toxic substances such as ammonia. It also serves as ion exchanger, catalyst and water softener. It also
participates in biological purification of the water, as it favors the development of bacteria that decompose organic
waste. Its absorptive properties are exhausted – depending on flora and fauna in the aquarium – within 1
÷
3 months.
After that time it should definitely be replaced.
•
Ceramic filtration cartridge
BioCeraMax Pro thanks to its huge porous surface is an ideal seat for bacteria cultures that
are responsible for decomposition and removal of organic waste from the tank, including toxic nitrates. It is enough to
wash it in chlorine-free water (e.g. taken from the aquarium) every half a year or replace half of the cartridge.
